For Rye dog owners looking for a nearby spot to let their furry friends run free, the Harrison Dog Park, located in Veteran’s Park at the end of Crystal Street, is a good and secure destination.
The fenced-in grass park is divided into two separate areas for dogs under and over 25 pounds. It is well equipped, with water fountains the dogs can drink from, poop bags, and garbage cans as well as a bulletin board where members can post dog-owner related information/messages.
The brainchild of Harrison resident and Boy Scout R.J. Suhre, who built it for his Eagle Scout project, it opened in July 2010. It came to fruition with the help of the Supervisor, Town Board, Recreation Department, the recently deceased Town Clerk, Joseph Acocella Jr., and generous donations from residents and local business owners. Yearly membership fees support the upkeep and maintenance of the park.
Members have to swipe an electric card to enter the metal gate and obey a list of rules. Some of these rules include: dogs must be healthy and not in heat, have a NYS license, and be over 4 months of age. Children under the age of 5 aren’t allowed inside, and children under 12 must be supervised by an adult. The park is also patrolled by a webcam.
Dog park membership is available to Harrison Town residents for a fee of $25 per dog, and out-of-town residents for $50. Rye residents should contact the Harrison Clerk’s Office at 670-3030 for complete instructions regarding dog park membership.
