Maybe there’s something to be said for scheduling your toughest opponent first. For the Rye Country Day School boys’ golf team, after Brunswick it’s all going to be skittles and beer.
At Apawamis April 1 and then again at Tamarack April 10, the golfers from Greenwich outdrove, out-chipped and outputted their local matchups — everywhere but at number one. There at the top spot, senior co-Captain Theo Humphrey did the driving, chipping and putting, hanging up the lowest score of both teams on both days — a 35 for nine holes the second time around. Fellow senior co-Captain Daniel Tricarico made it close in his first match, falling a single stroke short at number two.
In between, the team easily beat the Masters School 8-1 on their Apawamis home course April 7. Coach Joe Isola, back at the helm after last coaching the team a quarter of a century ago, was philosophical two weeks in. “With seven seniors, we’re fortunate to have plenty of experience and maturity on the team. Brunswick is always strong, and the big thing is to learn from it. I think we did.”
He went on to say, “I will rely on all of them, especially Theo and Daniel for leadership. With Gabe Regan, Reed Hammer, Andrew Starker, Chase Jaeger, and Jack Zenkel all seniors, we’ll be fine. Junior Kris Scarfone, sophomore Grant Wagman, and freshman Eddie Massaro will have plenty of opportunities to compete in matches.”
The Wildcats next take on King School April 22.
