RHStrack-1Over the course of two days, Rye High and five other teams competed in the Section 1 Track Meet, which began May 4 at Byram Hills High School and concluded the next day at Rye High. The Garnet boys placed a close second to Harrison and the girls finished in third place, behind Harrison and Byram Hills. In all, the boys competed in 24 events, and the girls in 25.

The outstanding performances by Garnets were many. Maggie McDermott won both the 2000m steeplechase and the 3000m run. Maeve Harris won the high jump. Two relay teams earned second-place honor: the 4×100 made up of Julia Nabhan, Harris, Andrea Palu, and Virginia Mead, and the 4×800 team of Anjali Logue, Julia Donovan, Mackenzie Smith, and McDermott.

track2Ryan Bird won first place in the 3200m with a time of 10:04, and came in second in the 1600m as well as the 800m. Jack Ryan took third place in the 3200m. Andrew Willis not only won the 400m dash, but also came in third in the 800m run. Owen Moore won the pentathlon as well as the high jump, and came in second in the long jump and shot put. Olivier Brandon won the discus throw. Alec Howells won the pole vault and Ian George won the shot put. Kenta Takatsu took second place in the 400m hurdles and Jon and Matt Dinowitz tied for second in the 100m dash.

Senior Captain Bird said, “Harrison has an excellent team and the fact that we could come that close says a lot about this team. Everyone on the team really gave it their all and I couldn’t be prouder to be a part of it.”

In the Loucks games at White Plains High School last weekend, McDermott improved on her steeplechase time to achieve a 7:36. In addition, the four senior captains; Bird, Ryan, Takatsu and Willis broke the school record in the Distance Medley Relay East Coast Championship with a time of 10.23.

The Garnets will be out in force at the Westchester County Track and Field Championships May 17 at Byram Hills High School.
