In this year’s list of Best High Schools in the United States by US News & World Report, Rye High School earned a first-place ranking for New York State public high schools, not including charter and magnet schools. On the list of New York State high schools, including charter and magnet schools, Rye High School ranked 9th. Out of over 21,000 public high schools in 49 states that were analyzed, Rye High ranked 61st in the country.
US News & World Report used a ranking system that was based on how well high schools prepare students for college, student test scores, and other factors. Schools were distinguished with Gold, Silver, or Bronze medals – RHS earned a Gold, the highest honor.
The U.S. News and World Report high school rankings, however, are considered problematic by many educators. Factors such as class size and the percentage of students who take AP exams weigh heavily in producing their list. But SAT and ACT scores are not factored in. Also, the percentage of students who receive a 4 or a 5 on AP exams is not included in their statistics – only the participation rate counts.
Still, it’s always nice to hear you’re No. 1.
