The Rye High School Boys Squash Team has been up and running with a great start led by captains James Reid, Elliot Meister, and Ward Urban. The team is 3-3 in match play so far and 2-3 in the Fairwest Public School Squash League, which has expanded to around 15 teams throughout Fairfield and Westchester counties. The first Fairwest Jamboree in December was canceled due to snow but the team is looking forward to the next one, Saturday, January 11 at Chelsea Piers in Stamford.
The Garnets are also primed for the U.S. Squash National High School Championship which will take place this year in Philadelphia February 7 through 9. Last year’s event was canceled because of weather, which was devastating especially for the seniors. “I think that with the talent we have this year, there is no reason why we cannot repeat the results we had several years ago with coming in the top three,” said Coach Mat Bruno, noting the strength of the freshman this season. He added that the players are excited to stay in Philadelphia and are looking forward to a squash trip to remember. The team is in the second half of the season and has about 13 more matches and a Jamboree before Nationals. Bruno said they will be ready.
