What hasn’t Diana King done so far this month? On the mound, her 39 strikeouts in three games have made playing defense behind her a piece of cake. At the plate, her first-week efforts of 5 for 7 with four RBI earned her honorable mention as LoHud’s Section One Player of the Week. Week 2 shows no signs of letting up.
At home April 9, King pitched and batted her team to a 6-1 lead en route to a 9-4 victory over another set of Panthers, the ones from Pleasantville. King’s 14 Ks in a complete-game performance has Rye Neck at 3-0, with one game suspended (the sodden Valhalla contest two days earlier was called in the 5th inning with King having yielded a lone hit).
Afterwards, Coach Joan Spedafino said, “We stress that we have to keep improving each day. They’re working hard and I’m very proud of them.”
Last year’s team nearly made it all the way. Could 2014 be the year? Coach Sped gave us the classic coach’s mantra: “I like to take the season one game at a time.”
The Panthers beat Rye High 9-2 on April 11. They will take on Ossining and Somers before traveling to Valhalla April 24, when the suspended game will be made up before the regularly scheduled contest.
