The Ryesing Stars, Rye Racquet Club’s 4.0 USTA team, stormed through the district and regional championships, aced the sectionals, and will compete for a national title, October 19–21 in Tucson.
While they started out in the 2.5 division in 2003, the Ryesing Stars have proven true to their name and continually risen in the ranks. In their nine years as a team, they’ve not only advanced to the more challenging 4.0 division, but have made it to sectionals six times and nationals three.
“We’ve always been knocking at the door,” said captain Randi Coppola. The national tournament will be tough, she adds. “We will be competing against the 17 best teams in the country at our level.”
Kate Jennings, a team member from the beginning, says everyone is working hard and playing more in preparation. “Our goal is to make it out of the initial round-robin and into the semifinals.”
But the overall goal in Tucson, according to Coppola, is to compete and have fun.
