At SPRYE’s third anniversary celebration September 18 at Wainwright House, the community raised a glass to longtime Rye residents and tireless volunteers Jane and Bob Mickatavage.
Before presenting the couple with a crystal house symbolizing SPRYE’s mission to keep seniors in their homes, Board President Nancy Haneman listed just some of the Mickatavage’s contributions to Rye over the years.
“The list is enormous! Jane worked at both Rye High School and Rye Country Day School as Director of Community Service. She was also a school psychologist at Rye High. She was a family therapist at Samaritan Counseling Center. Jane was involved with the 26th Twig for many years, as well as past chairman of the Twig Organization. She was a co-founder of ICARE and a founder of the Keenager Program. The list continues with Rye Believes in Music, Rye Presbyterian Nursery School Board, the Rye YMCA, the Rye Youth Council, and Rye Women’s Interfaith. SPRYE is very lucky to have her on its Board.
“We all know Bob Mickatavage, doctor extraordinaire. Over the years, starting in 1964, he has seen so many patients and helped them with their eye problems. He has been involved in the Medical Society of the State of New York, New York Eye and Ear, St. Vincent’s Hospital, and United Hospital. His professional medical society memberships are many. He has been involved in the Rye Schools and Rye Presbyterian Church in varying roles. Apologies if I have left something out!”
Assemblyman Steve Otis presented Jane and Bob with a proclamation declaring September 18 Jane and Bob Mickatavage Day.
Jane and Bob have set a high entertainment bar for next year’s event, performing “A Toast” with family members, and Bob on accordion. They skillfully changed the lyrics of a song they perform at family gatherings to reflect the great work of SPRYE.
Thanks go to Emily and Tom Saunders, who chaired this event with thought and sparkle for a third straight year.
