The Rye Country Day girls’ basketball team hit the hardcourt with a vengeance in the Fieldston Tip-Off Tournament earlier this month. The Wildcats ripped through the tourney hosts 61-31 in the first round, and then defeated Staten Island Academy, the reigning NYSAIS State champs, 65-60 in the championship.

The Wildcats followed up the dazzling performance by winning their own event, the John Sabia/RCDS Holiday Tournament with a pair of 29-point victories December 8 and 10. Making the 4-1 start even more impressive is the fact that the young Wildcats are doing it under the leadership of first-year head coach Margaret Scarcella.
Junior sharpshooter Carolyn Binder was named MVP of both tournaments. She scored 28 points in the John Sabia championship to become just the second player in school history to surpass the 1,000-point mark. Binder already holds the school record for all-time assists, and is currently top-three among scorers in all of Westchester County.
Rye Country Day’s next contest is January 6 at home against Riverdale.
