Pro Squash Tour begins its 2012-13 season in Rye Brook with the Buffalo Wild Wings Open, this weekend, at Club@ 800 Squash & Fitness at 800 Westchester Avenue.
The season opener will feature a mix of top juniors who will test their talents against the pros. Junior competitors Mason Ripka, Anders Larson, Pierson Broadwater, and Jordan Brail — all of whom are under 17 — are elite players with international experience.
Broadwater, who is currently ranked in the top five in his age division, has twice represented the U.S. in international competition. Ripka was the first junior to compete in a PST tournament two years ago. He has won several U.S. junior national championships, and this past summer he represented the U.S. at the World Junior Team Championships in Qatar. Brail, a top-five U.S. junior in his division, competes out of Riverdale Country School and is a former Canadian Junior Open and U.S. National champion. Larson, 16, is the reigning U.S. U-17 National Champion.
The young stars are eager to take on pros such as Adrian Leanza, former Brown University No. 1 and winner of PST’s 2011 Philadelphia Open, Ned Marks, who finished last season in the top 8 in PST rankings, and Club @800’s teaching pro Shahid Khan, PST’s 2012 Pyramid Open Champion. Others to watch are Assem Salem and Mohamed Nabil of Egypt and Phil Wilkins of Wales.
Matches began Friday. The finals will be held Sunday at noon. For more information, visit www.ProSquashTour.net.
The Club @800 Squash & Fitness is owned and operated by Tiffany and Mike Callaway, who have coached many of the region’s top juniors and teams, including squash team members from Rye High School.
