Todd Paul and Enrique Catter successfully defended their title at the 53rd Richardson Invitational doubles title August 11 at Manursing Island Club. They defeated Manursing’s own racquets director, Mark Parsons and former Israeli Davis Cupper, Harel Sguro, 6-4, 7-6.
Paul, who was once ranked No. 1 nationally as a college player at Wake Forest, and Catter, a Peruvian who is Shenorock Shore Club’s director of tennis, held off a second-set surge by their opponents. The final was played before a large group of spectators, who were thoroughly entertained by the many long rallies, some at close quarters at net.
The tournament is named for Manursing member Tom Richardson, brother of Davis Cupper Ham Richardson, who died at age 32 from a rare form of cancer.
