METRIC-IMG 0674Before the end of school, Midland art teacher Bret Reilly and Dr. Steve Cohen, the former Assistant Superintendent, came up with a practical way to demonstrate the metric system to young students — signposts.

“It’s a growing sign,” said Mr. Reilly, “we’re going to be adding to it.”

The signpost in front of Midland School is not only a useful way to expose the metric system — a kilometer is .6 miles for you older students — it’s helpful for visitors. So far, the destinations near and far include Rye’s other schools, Playland, the Bronx Zoo, Tokyo, Baghdad, and Dublin, a nod to Mr. Reilly’s ancestry. The indoor signage along the hallway points to the cafeteria, the playgrounds, and all the other important Midland destinations.
