Kenneth Eugene Dahlgren, a former Rye Fire Chief and resident of Rye for over 60 years, passed away peacefully on March 16, 2021 surrounded by his family.
Born in Mamaroneck, N.Y. on March 24, 1931, he was the son of Herman and Myrtle (Preston) Dahlgren. He attended Harrison High School and was a member of the class of 1950. Upon graduation, he joined the US Navy and faithfully served his country during the Korean War on the USS Picking. He was honorably discharged in July 1954 and was awarded the Korean Service Medal. His highest rank achieved was ICFN (Fireman, Interior Communications Electrician Striker).
Mr. Dahlgren began his career as a technician for the New York Telephone Company right out of high school in 1950 and worked there once he returned from military service until 1989. From 1990 to 2015, he worked for Byram Hills School Transportation Company.
He was a member of the Rye Fire Department from 1963-2021 and served as a Fire Chief from 1978-1984. He was also a member of the Boat Basin Commission and organized and instituted the Rye High School Garnet Football Spaghetti Dinner.
A lifelong NY Yankee fan, he was also a devoted Rye Garnet Football fan.
In addition to his wife of 66 years, Diane (Cole) Dahlgren, who was the love of his life, he survived by his seven children: Debra Pierson of Stamford, Conn., Douglas Dahlgren of Rye, Darlene Dahlgren of Rye, Diana Page of East Norwich, N.Y., Dorrie Marini of Rye Brook, Dawn Berrocal of Rye, and Desiree Powers of Darien, Conn. He was also blessed with 16 grandchildren and ten great-grandchildren, all of whom survive him.
A funeral service was held March 20 at Christ’s Church in Rye.
