When Julia Laber first set foot in the New York Dance Studio in Harrison, she never dreamed that the poster of London on the wall foretold a great adventure. But this summer, after years of hard work, the adventure has arrived.
When Julia Laber first set foot in the New York Dance Studio in Harrison, she never dreamed that the poster of London on the wall foretold a great adventure. But this summer, after years of hard work, the adventure has arrived. Students at the New York Dance Studio, eight of whom are Rye residents, have been invited to perform in London as part of the 2012 Olympic festivities.
The girls will give two performances, one on the banks of the Thames and the other in Warwick Castle. Each performance will consist of 12 numbers and 12 costume changes.
Last year, the group warmed up by performing at Lincoln Center. For London, they’ve done extensive fundraising and have learned all-new dances in hip-hop, modern, and jazz.
Away from the Olympic excitement, the Rye contingent of Julia, Moena Hatanaka, Kazune Itoh, Diana King, Kate Laverty, Norie Nomura, Sarah Schreib, and Zoe Whitehead Rockas hope to have a chance to visit the London Eye and the set of Harry Potter.
The girls and their lucky family members leave August 6. We know they’ll make our town and a few others proud!
