Jay Mahoney travels the world in search of wildlife, which he captures poetically in motion and at rest.
On a trip to Kenya in September, he stayed first at Elephant Bedroom Camp in Samburu National Reserve, which is in the northern part of the country. He wrote us that not only was he in the company of a pride of 22 elephants, but he saw reticulated giraffes, and gerenuk standing on their hind legs to reach vegetation.
Every day he watched a cheetah with her four cubs. “We found her at dawn one morning on her way to hunt. The cubs followed for about 30 yards and then stopped and watched her walk off. They went back to a tree and waited,” he reported. “It took a lot of waiting to finally get a photo of all four of them facing forward!” When the mother returned after an unsuccessful hunt, he added, the cubs went up to greet her but then headed to a fallen tree to play.
