Rye High’s 15-1 field hockey team won their league III-B title on October 17 with a 3-0 win over Horace Greeley. Less than 24 hours earlier, they bested Ossining 4-0. Freshman Fusine Gouaert caged the ball twice in each game. Meredith Tibbals scored the third against Greeley and senior captain Alex Bennett and Emily Antinozzi each scored one in the Ossining game.
After the Greeley game, Coach Emily Fitzgerald commented, “Winning the league title was one of the goals that the girls made during preseason. It feels good.”
What didn’t feel so good was losing the last game of the season, 2-0, to Mamaroneck, on October 21. However, Coach Fitzgerald explained that they like to play Mamaroneck at the end of the season “because the high level of competition prepares us for sectional play.”
Rye is the No. 2 seed in Sectionals, which begin next week. They will play the winner of Pelham/Brewster at home after their first-round bye. The No. 1 seed is Lakeland, the 2012 State Champions, to whom the Garnets have lost in the finals four years in a row.
The Garnets said they are taking it one game at a time.
