want to respond to the article by Howard Husock in your August 25 issue promoting composting in Rye. I was an early adopter of composting and ours of the curbside pickup pilot households. We never missed a week, except when we were away. We have continued composting with the countertop pail, green bucket, and at least weekly drop-offs to Disbrow. This has cut our garbage pickup by at least one-third. Literally every food scrap goes into the pail. I even bring my leftovers from the office home and dump those scraps in.
Just this week, I watched DPW do crazy broken U-turns for green waste pickup — highly inefficient, crisscrossing town to pick up small and large bundles and bags. Many homes had no green waste out for pickup. We need to promote composting and add back in curbside pickup. If we can have green waste and garbage/recycling pickups, we can certainly have compost pickups. If Rye could cut its household garbage pickup by one-third, the money saved would probably more than pay for additional routes. If New York City can implement mandatory composting, borough by borough in 2024 and 2025, so can Rye.
I encourage everyone to email the Rye City Council and politely demand the return of composting pickup. It will not only benefit us, but our children and grandchildren, as well.
